Volunteering with FAST Romania

Volunteering for one of the FAST projects in Romania is an amazing experience

Ema Hristea is FAST’s Volunteer Coordinator. Please contact Ema to discuss a volunteering opportunity

Our volunteers have the opportunity to help in a variety of ways during their visit, including working:

  • In construction, building homes and workshops in Roma communities as part of our Better Homes Project
  • With local first graders on educational activities and games in our Education Project at the Integration Centre
  • On the social care initiatives run from the Mission House at the Roma settlement in Tarlungeni

Volunteer accommodation

FAST Romania provide affordable accommodation with free wi-fi at their location in Sacele. Accommodation is provided in twin or dormitory rooms and is an important source of income for the charity

A kitchen area is available for basic food preparation and the Ziurel Cafe is open at lunchtime offering excellent food options. A lounge area is available for use in the evenings and weekends and laundry facilities are available on request

Transport whilst in Romania

When working on a FAST Romania project, transport is provided between the Ziurel Centre and the location of the project. FAST can also provide transport for day trips, subject to availablility of the minibuses

FAST can provide an airport pick-up and drop-off service between their base in Sacele and Bucharest, Otopeni airport

The cost depends on the size of group, as follows:

  • For 3 to 4 people, where a car can be used, the cost is 300 lei (approximately £60) per pick-up or drop-off
  • For groups of up to 8 people, where a minibus is required, the cost is 350 lei (approximately £70) per pick-up or drop-off

If you are making your own arrangements, then there are a number of car rental agencies at the airport, and trains run regularly from Bucharest North station to Brasov. Taxis between Sacele and Brasov are readily available at a very reasonable price

Why volunteer?

It is a unique opportunity to support the vital work of educating disadvantaged and impoverished communities, families, and children. Not only will you have a chance to make a hands-on difference in someone's life, but you'll also get a personal look at an environment that is largely unseen and forgotten by outsiders

Additionally, the acceptance and love you extend during your visit will live on in the growing confidence we see in Roma communities that for too long have experienced discrimination and marginalisation in their own country

Volunteering with FAST can also be an amazing vacation experience. If you can drag yourself away from the project work then you can visit one or more of the popular tourist attractions that central Romania has to offer. The city of Brasov, the famous Bran castle, and many breathtaking skiing or hiking areas are all within an hour's drive of our centre in Sacele
